  The most common vision or refractive errors treated at Laser Eye Center™ include myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. Myopia Myopia, or nearsightedness, is the most widespread refractive error of the eye. If you are nearsighted, you naturally will have difficulty reading road signs and seeing distant objects clearly, but you will be able to see well for close-up tasks such as reading and computer use.Other signs and symptoms of myopia include squinting, eye strain and headaches. Feeling fatigued when driving or playing sports also can be a symptom of uncorrected nearsightedness. Hyperopia Hyperopia, or farsightedness, is a common type of refractive error in which distant objects may be seen clearly, while having issues seeing objects that are near. Affecting about 10 percent of Americans, hyperopia develops in eyes that focus images behind the retina instead of on the retina, which can result in blurred vision. This occurs when the eyeball is too short, which in turn inhibits incoming light from focusing directly on the retina. It may also be caused by an irregular shape of the cornea or lens. Astigmatism Astigmatism is an imperfection in the curvature of your eye’s cornea or lens. To have good vision, the cornea and lens are smooth and evenly curved in all directions. This enables light rays to focus sharply onto the retina at the back of your eye. If your cornea or lens is not smooth and evenly curved, light rays are not refracted or bent properly causing a ‘refractive error’ that presents as blurry or distorted vision. • Pterygium

  Pterygium is a benign, elevated growth from the conjunctiva (“white part of the eye”) onto the cornea (in front of the colored part of the eye). Pinguecula is a yellow deposit or elevation on only the conjunctiva (“white part of the eye”). The conjunctiva is a clear mucous membrane that lines the inside of the eyelids, serving to lubricate the eye and to prevent microbes from entering the eye. Both Pterygium and Pinguecula are associated with excessive UV light exposure (i.e. sunlight), wind, and dust. Pterygium can cause distortion of the cornea, severely affecting vision or blocking the vision completely. Corneal scarring underneath the Pterygium can also occur, making it very important for them to be removed before becoming too large, permanently affecting the patient’s vision. Symptoms of both Pterygium and Pinguecula include burning, itching, tearing, redness, and scratchy sensation in the eye. Cosmetically, a Pterygium or Pinguecula can impact the social and professional life of the patient. The affected eye often has a red, distorted appearance. Because of this, many patients state that they are wrongly accused of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Treatment Pterygium and Pinguecula that cause mild inflammation can usually be treated with steroid drops, lubricant eye drops, or a prescribed ointment. However, these are often just a temporary solution, and the Pterygium or Pinguecula must eventually be surgically removed. The Pterygium/Pinguecula surgery lasts approximately thirty minutes and has a recovery time of only a couple of days. When the Pterygium or Pinguecula is removed, conjunctiva underneath is also extracted. The special “Auto-graft” technique our surgeons at Laser Eye Center™ use replaces this tissue with the patient’s own conjunctival tissue that is surgically removed from the healthy conjunctiva superiorly (not visible, as it is hidden underneath the upper eyelid). This “self-tissue” is then fixated using medical adhesive. This advanced technique significantly decreases the risk of regression or recurrence. Ensuring a healthy tear film as well as protection from the sun, dust and wind is also very important. Informational Video for Pterygium Technology Auto-graft technique for pterygium removal The auto-graft technique is a key advance in pterygium removal decreasing recurrence rates substantially. This technique uses a patient’s own healthy eye tissue to replace portions of tissue that are excised when the pterygium is surgically removed. A surgeon applies anesthetic drops to numb the eye, removes the pterygium, then uses a self-transplant technique to fill the area with healthy conjunctival tissue. The transplanted conjunctival tissue is affixed to the target area by either sutures or a special fibrin adhesive. Although sutures are less expensive, fibrin glue cuts recovery time, while reducing inflammation and discomfort. The procedure is quick and routine, with a low risk for complications. The patient receives topical antibiotics and anti-inflammation drops, and wears a patch for the next 24 hours

  Presbyopia is a naturally occurring age-related condition where your eye’s natural lens becomes increasingly firm and inflexible, causing you to lose the ability to focus on near objects. It ultimately affects just about everyone and usually becomes noticeable sometime after the age of 40. As one ages, the eye loses flexibility and has trouble focusing through a range of distances. With this condition people struggle with close range vision, also known as farsightedness and can no longer read without eyeglasses. While presbyopia may seem to occur suddenly, it actually takes several years for an individual to be aware that seeing close up has become more difficult. During childhood, people with normal vision have the ability to focus on objects as close as their nose and also on objects that are very far away. They can rapidly, without conscious thought, switch focus from near to far vision. This is called accommodation. As each year passes, that ability to focus and to switch focus decreases. By the time most people reach their forties, they often need to introduce a visual aid, such as reading glasses or bifocals, to focus on close-up objects. This decreased elasticity and inability to easily shift focus from near to far is a condition called presbyopia. Monovision is a technique where one eye (usually the dominant eye) is corrected for clear distance vision and the other eye is corrected for comfortable near vision. Monovision allows a person to see close objects clearly with one eye and distance objects clearly with the other eye. The brain’s vision center tends to filter out the image from the eye that is not in clear focus. Those who have monovision eventually do not pay attention to the eye that is not as clearly focused, gaining the ability to see well at a distance and nearby. Monovision can be achieved with contact lenses or with vision correction procedures. This is achieved by correcting the non-dominant eye for near vision and the dominant eye for distance vision. Most people automatically adjust to monovision within a couple of weeks or months. In our experience, most people over the age of 40 to 45 who try monovision and take the time to fully become accustomed to it, like it and find it very useful. • Dry Eye Treatments

  Dry eye is a chronic and progressive disease that affects 30 million people in US alone, and 86% of it is attributable to Meibomian Gland Disease. Candidates suffer from eyes do not produce enough tears to keep them properly lubricated. As a result of not having enough moisture, the eyes can feel dry, scratchy, and irritated. Other symptoms can include a stinging or burning sensation, sensitivity to heated or air-condition environments, or the sense that something is stuck in the eye. So why Meibomian Gland Disease (MGD)? Every time you blink, there is a protective layer of moisture called the ‘tear film’ that coats the front surface of your eye. An essential part of the tear film is an oily layer called meibum. MGD occurs when the glands that produce meibum get blocked, which in turn leads to evaporative tear loss or dry eye. In this modern age, we spend about 7.5 hours a day on a computer or phone screen. • Keratoconus

  Keratoconus refers to a condition wherein there is a degeneration of the structure of the cornea, which is the transparent layer forming the front of the eye. This asymmetry is caused by a thinning of the cornea that forces the eye to bulge forward. Keratoconus can lead to distorted and blurred vision that can worsen over time. As a result, patients experience sensitivity to light, and difficulty seeing at night. Most affected are individuals between 10 to 25 years of age, which chances of developing the condition increasing if it runs in the family. Importantly, keratoconus can worsen over time, so early detention is key. Diagnostics Historically, patients have had to wait until their eyesight quality has deteriorated before doctors can confidently diagnose keratoconus, but a new genetic test for keratoconus can now help patients seek treatment before permanently losing sight. The AvaGen™ test uses a simple cheek swab to collect a DNA sample from patients. A laboratory then analyzes this DNA for the presence of gene variants linked to keratoconus and other forms of corneal disease. After, doctors share this information with their patients, alerting them to any genetic links that necessitate them being hypervigilant about their corneal health. AvaGen™ genetic test for corneal disease is a smart choice for patients who have a family history of corneal problems, a thin or thinning cornea or a high level of astigmatism or nearsightedness. It is also recommended for patients with borderline cornea curvature data and who are considering having LASIK. By having this genetic knowledge, patients can receive proactive care that may prevent some of the worst effects of keratoconus and corneal dystrophy. Treatment Intacs Corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) is a leading treatment for keratoconus and was developed in 1998 by Theo Seiler, MD. The treatment has been shown in numerous clinical trials to strengthen the eye’s clear surface (cornea) through the application of riboflavin, a form of vitamin-B2, followed by treatment with ultraviolet A (UV-A) light. Noting that the cornea is made up of millions of fibers that are linked together to maintain the corneas dull shape, the aim of corneal crosslinking is to strengthen the cornea by increasing the number of “anchors” that bond collagen fibers together. Much like how a sweater relies on the hundreds of threads that are woven together to maintain its structure, keratoconus occurs when the links between corneal fibers are weakened ultimately altering the corneas shape. Minimally invasive, the treatment that involves administration drops of a vitamin solution called riboflavin to your cornea with the aim of strengthening and stabilizing the shape of your cornea. The saturated cornea will then be exposed to UV light which activates the solution. The drops and light work together to make the bonds in the cornea stronger, preventing further progression. Intacs corneal inserts, sometimes called implants, are a minimally invasive surgical option used primarily for the treatment of keratoconus. Intacs are two tiny, clear crescent-shaped pieces of a plastic polymer that are inserted into the cornea to reshape the front surface of the eye. For keratoconus patients, Intacs works by flattening the steep part of the cornea or cone as some call it to reduce vision distortions. Intacs are made of the same biocompatible material found in intraocular lenses used for cataract surgery, so there is little to no risk of adverse effects from the material. The procedure lasts about 15 minutes per eye and uses corneal implants are designed for long-term vision correction. Intacs are a popular choice among patients given that they can always be removed for good or replaced with different size implants as your prescription changes with age. If you have Intacs removed, vision tends to return to the way it was before surgery within three months. Those receiving replacement Intacs have attained good visual results describing their vision as “crisper & clearer,” and no serious problems with repeating the procedure have been reported.
